The students' assignment is to design a model for the free fall of an object of mass m subject to gravity

F z =mg

for the purpose of

  • predicting how the object falls;
  • computing the position y(t) of the object.

The predictions are experimentally tested.

It is discussed with students why this simple example is the basis for modelling problem situations in which also forces other than the gravitational force play a role.1
