Topics in Number Theory 2026

This year the topics in number theory course will be about Galois representations. The plan is roughly to do the following:

- profinite groups and infinite Galois theory.

- p-adic numbers, local fields and their absolute Galois group.

- The absolute Galois group of a number field

- Representations of the absolute Galois group into finite dimensional vector spaces over the complex numbers

- The statements of Class field theory (local and global), ideles and adeles.

- Artin representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field

- l-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field

Location and time

UPDATE: Due to the small blackboard in SP D1.160 I asked the administration to change to a new lecture room with bigger blackboard. For the rest of the semester we have now SP D1.162. Exam and retake are still in the same room as before. The course starts on Feb 6h, and runs until (and including) May 21st, with the exception of March 26th, April 30th, May14th. Final exam is on May 28th, room D1.114, at 13:00. Retake: June 25h, Sp D1.160 at 13:00.
