StarLight - Amsterdam Science Park Itanium Tests

Setup

To be able to perform network tests at the Lambda connection between StarLight, Chicago and the Amsterdam Science Park, Amsterdam, a HP Itanium host, equipped with a 10 Gbits/s interface has been connected with this interface to the Force10 switch located at Chicago and an equivalent Itanium has been connected to the Amsterdam Force10 switch in a corresponding way. The OS configuration of both hosts was not identical: the Chicago host was running Red Hat Linux Advanced Server release 2.1AS (Derry) using a 2.4.22-web100 kernel, while the Amsterdam host was running Debian GNU/Linux testing/unstable using a 2.6.0-test5 kernel.

Performed Experiments

The main purpose of these experiments was to check the performance of the Itanium hosts in combination with both Force 10 switches with a provided bandwidth of 10 Gbits/s. In this setup it was not possible to use a large number of different flows. Therefore, there will be merely focused upon the plain performance of the standard and special protocols. When available the results from various dates will be presented.

In the next sub-sections the results of the executed experiments will be presented for the various protocol types.
