• 1990-1995: PhD in Physics, work performed at Amolf, under supervision of Harm Geert Muller
• 1995-1996: postdoc in the group of Wolfgang Ketterle
• 1996-2000: postdoc and KNAW academy researcher in the Quantum Optics group at Leiden University
• 2000-2002: universitair docent in the Charged Particle Optics group at Delft University of Technology
