The marriage
problem
and
the fate of bachelors
Matching problems, for instance making couples from groups of males and females, have received renewed interest from studies of spin glasses.
[P44]
considers the case where groups need not be equally large, so that bachelors
must be taken into the description. It was found that the probability to remain
alone does not only depend on the qualities of the individual, or absence
thereof, but also on properties of the society.
This work recieved attention from popular journals such as New Scientist and Die Welt.
It has connections to the trade problems in the new field of econophysics.
